What, no house?

Sunday, May 25, 2008 by Kevin

As I was looking arround for a new MMO to play, I was looking for one with Player Owned Housing. Theres something about having a virtual house when you don't have your own. I, being on a low budget, looked for a free MMO, and found nothing in ways of Player Owned Housing. The only results that came up about player owned housing where:

  • Vanguard
  • LOTRO
  • a few other non-related links

I also knew that EQ, Ultima and Puzzle Pirates have player owned housing (98% of furniture costs prenium Dubloons in Puzzle Pirates without a subscription). And we can't forget Runescape's Junky Housing System (Who came up with the idea of "Hotspots").

The game Maplestory has NO player housing, but players as far as I can see are asking for it. I don't get why we can't get that if its already in other MMORPGs. I know many players say "Its called the Sims" but, there are several problems I have with that:

a.Its not an MMORPG (anymore)
b.There is no other gameplay

So that puts the Sims out of the question.

I came along this game called Whirled. Its like a cross between an MMO and Virtual World and based in the browser, and you can create your own custom furniture, avatars(that actually move) and room designs. Then you can put it in the shop for others to buy. However, I find the games long and boring and the games are the ONLY way to make money. (If anyone from Three Rings sees this, take this note of advice, TAKE A NEOPETS APPROCH, short and simple games. If you want to try Whirled, its at http://whirled.com.

Japan ahoy!

Friday, May 23, 2008 by Kevin

Puzzle Pirates is going to Japan. Its good for them. However, I wonder how it will work, most free MMORPGS come from overseas, now we are sending one over there. Thats good, however, american goods (Like the XBOX360) don't do well over there. Will it be a major success, or a failure? I'm just waiting to find out. If you haven't played Puzzle Pirates, I suggest you do.

The Long Hours of Work............Patching.

by Kevin

Everyone knows in MMOs you have patches for your games, and many people are tired of all the patches and leave to console. However, I believe that patching is something that only helps us. If there where no patches, we would never have an update to a game. (Just like on the DS), and the game stays pretty constant, and the game will loose players faster. I know that it sometimes takes a long time, but usually, the content is worth it. Even a bug fix is worth it, so you don't get trapped in it. Please patch your games, it makes the gameplay better.

The Lack Luster of PBBGs

Thursday, May 22, 2008 by Kevin

When you go on the internet, and look for a PBBG, its usually the same old thing as the one you saw the day before. When will we finally see a real difference between games. Runescape probally being the best RPG I have played in the browser and Tribal Wars being the best RTS I have played in the browser. Now I ask, are there really creative games out there that I have just missed, maybe because its not high enough on Google? All the ones I have seen are pretty much just a copy of the next. For example, look at runescape (runescape.com) and Nowhere Else and Beyond (http://www.nowhere-else.org/). Pretty much the same. Tribalwars (tribalwars.net) and Travian(travian.com), pretty much the same. What do you look for in a game?

Will runescape never die?

by Kevin

For all runescape players out there, you know that Jagex trashed the wild. Well, even though they did that, is runescape still going strong, according to this chart, with well over one million subscribers:
(For the original chart, click here.) Image from MMOGCHART.com

When my friend told me this had happened, I was slightly shocked, but once I read the news post on it, it did make sence. However, after, there was a big uproar, but did it have as big of an effect as we all thought? And although they made it into minigames, that may be better. I being an ex-member have a full bank account, making it hard to store items, however, now I can go into the wild without a worry as long as I stay away from ghosts.
Remember the clan system, where all it was was clan chat, well now we have Clan Wars, which is very similar to the Members Only Castle Wars. Plus, Clan Wars should be getting some updates soon.
(Quote from Runescape.com -- Posted March 27th)
Clan Wars Changes:
We've had a good look at the suggestions players have been sending in for Clan Wars. In particular, we'd like to add a 'run-in' option, where players will be permitted to re-join the battle after they've died. The first team to achieve a pre-agreed number of kills may be declared victorious. Along with this, we're looking to provide a choice of arenas, each with different scenery and obstacles. We've got plenty more Clan Wars features planned - including some 'dangerous' ones - so keep your eyes peeled for information.
You know the great wilderness capes, we, free people, finally got them. And for some reason, I have only seen one other person wearing my cape. This is another thing that will help with clans.
I hope that Jagex will smarten up and do more with clans. And luckly all these noob clans have calmed down, which where crowding the Runescape Section at onRPG for weeks after clan chat was released. So, did clans save Runescape? I want to hear your opinion
